Course Overview<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Earth Science is a high school science course that explores Earth\u2019s structure, interacting systems, and place in the universe. The course uncovers concepts and processes found in:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • astronomy \u2013 Earth\u2019s place in and interaction with space,<\/li>\n
  • geology \u2013 physical structure and dynamic processes,<\/li>\n
  • meteorology \u2013 atmosphere, weather and climate, and<\/li>\n
  • oceanography \u2013 oceans and marine life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Students will have the opportunity to evaluate and explore many scientific concepts by participating in interactive lab sessions, conducting hands-on activities, and completing projects designed to improve the understanding of Earth and its dynamic functions.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Dynamic Structure of Earth:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore the changes and cycles constantly affecting the Earth.<\/li>\n
    • Forces and Features of Earth:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will learn about the forces at work on the Earth, such as earthquakes and volcanoes and how to use maps.<\/li>\n
    • Features of Earth\u2019s Crust:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will learn about rocks, minerals and other resources.<\/li>\n
    • Shaping Earth\u2019s Crust:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore the forces that shape the Earth\u2019s crust, such as weathering and erosion, and other constructive and destructive forces.<\/li>\n
    • Earth\u2019s Water:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore the water cycle and the different bodies of water on the Earth.<\/li>\n
    • Earth\u2019s Atmosphere:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore the make-up of the Earth\u2019s atmosphere and the impact of humans on the atmosphere.<\/li>\n
    • Earth\u2019s Weather and Climate:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore weather and climate and how to measure and predict weather.<\/li>\n
    • Astronomy:<\/strong>\u00a0Students will explore the solar system and other celestial bodies in the universe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Unit 1: Dynamic Structure of Earth<\/strong><\/p>\n

      • examine the significance of Earth\u2019s orbital position, moon, and composition<\/li>\n
      • describe the internal structure of the earth<\/li>\n
      • analyze the fossil, geologic, and climatic evidence for continental drift<\/li>\n
      • describe the four main spheres of Earth\u2019s exterior and how they are interdependent<\/li>\n
      • identify how Earth\u2019s geochemical cycles support a balance of materials on Earth<\/li>\n
      • identify how Earth\u2019s biochemical cycles create a balance of materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Unit 2: Forces and Features of Earth<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • describe the forces involved with earthquakes and compare and contrast the types of seismic waves produced by an earthquake<\/li>\n
        • define faults, folds, and their features<\/li>\n
        • summarize the structure, force, and location of volcanoes<\/li>\n
        • distinguish the different types of volcanic mountains<\/li>\n
        • describe the basic features of map<\/li>\n
        • interpret the shape and elevation of surface features on a topographic map<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Unit 3: Features of Earth\u2019s Crust<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \n
          • identify the five conditions that define a mineral and categorize minerals by chemical composition<\/li>\n
          • identify common characteristics if igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks<\/li>\n
          • describe the rock cycle and compare and contrast the processes that cause igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary<\/li>\n
          • identify advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy source<\/li>\n
          • identify the advantages and disadvantages of nonrenewable energy sources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Unit 4: Shaping Earth\u2019s Crust<\/strong><\/p>\n

            • compare and contrast biological, physical, and chemical weathering<\/li>\n
            • describe the erosion process and compare and contrast water and wind erosion<\/li>\n
            • distinguish the four types of erosional forces and effects of rivers, waves, gravity and glaciers, and wind<\/li>\n
            • identify destructive forces in nature and how they change the Earth\u2019s crust<\/li>\n
            • identify constructive forces in nature and how they change the Earth\u2019s crust<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Unit 6: Earth\u2019s Water<\/strong><\/p>\n

              • explain the water cycle and describe evaporation, condensation, sublimation, transpiration, infiltration, and precipitation<\/li>\n
              • describe the basic chemical and physical properties of water and how it is affected by temperature, pH, and dissolved minerals<\/li>\n
              • describe the distribution of Earth\u2019s water<\/li>\n
              • define groundwater, how it forms, and how it is located and compare and contrast the three types of aquifers<\/li>\n
              • describe the four main physical and chemical properties of ocean water and how it is used<\/li>\n
              • explain the effect of wind and Earth\u2019s rotation on surface currents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Unit 7: Earth\u2019s Atmosphere<\/strong><\/p>\n

                • understand that Earth\u2019s atmosphere allows for respiration and photosynthesis<\/li>\n
                • identify the primary gases and distinguish among the layers of the atmosphere<\/li>\n
                • explain the impact biogeochemical cycles have on life<\/li>\n
                • discuss how heat is maintained and distributed in the atmosphere<\/li>\n
                • describe the causes and effects of air pollution and climate change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Unit 8: Earth\u2019s Weather and Climate<\/strong><\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • differentiate weather and climate and identify global weather patterns and climate zones<\/li>\n
                  • distinguish between the different types of clouds and precipitation and how they relate to weather conditions<\/li>\n
                  • distinguish between different types of fronts and relate air masses and fronts to weather conditions<\/li>\n
                  • describe how the Sun influences weather conditions<\/li>\n
                  • identify factors that determine climate zones and recognize factors that can change global climate<\/li>\n
                  • describe how a meteorologist measures and forecasts the weather<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    Unit 9: Astronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • distinguish planets from other types of solar system objects<\/li>\n
                    • describe Kepler\u2019s three laws of planetary motion<\/li>\n
                    • relate Newton\u2019s laws of gravity and motion to the orbit of planets<\/li>\n
                    • explain the relationship between the earth\u2019s tilt on its axis and the seasons<\/li>\n
                    • identify important characteristics of the Sun and other stars<\/li>\n
                    • distinguish between spiral, irregular, and elliptical galaxies and describe the development of galaxies over time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
