Course Overview<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

This course provides a foundation to understanding key applications, computing fundamentals, and online living. It is one semester with 7 units containing 48 instructional lessons and 1 project. Most lessons in this course are designed to take 1-2 days to complete, while most projects take 2-3 days.<\/p>\n

  • Unit 1:\u00a0<\/b>Describe technology basics including finger placement on the keyboard and the differences between hardware and software.<\/li>\n
  • Unit 2:\u00a0<\/b>Describe the functions of operating systems and their utilities.<\/li>\n
  • Unit 3:\u00a0<\/b>Identify computer networks, how they work, and computer and internet safety.<\/li>\n
  • Unit 4:<\/b>\u00a0Identify different communications industries and how to use email, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.\u00a0<\/li>\n
  • Unit 5:\u00a0<\/b>Describe how to create spreadsheets, enter data, create graphs, and use formulas and shortcuts in the spreadsheet.\u00a0<\/li>\n

        Unit 3: Networks and Security<\/h4>\n

        • Explain what a computer network is, function, types, and benefits, of using one.\u00a0<\/li>\n
        • Determine the difference between LAN, MAN, and WAN.\u00a0<\/li>\n
        • Examine the characteristics of reliable and safe Internet sites.<\/li>\n
        • Identify computer storage types, their reliability, and options to protect data.\u00a0<\/li>\n
        • Explain what malware is, problems caused by malware, and how to protect against it.\u00a0<\/li>\n
        • Determine digital solutions to security threats.<\/li>\n
        • Identify hardware components and functions and the difference between storage and memory.\u00a0<\/li>\n
        • Explain the differences between RAM and ROM and the function of a central processing unit.\u00a0<\/li>\n

          • Explain basic presentation techniques in PowerPoint and describe how to create a PowerPoint presentation.<\/li>\n
          • Explain the purpose and function of Microsoft Outlook.<\/li>\n
          • Explain the rules of netiquette and apply netiquette in electronic communication.<\/li>\n
          • Demonstrate how to open, save, share, and print a document and create folders for organization.<\/li>\n

            Unit 5: Spreadsheets and Databases<\/h4>\n

            • Identify the parts of a spreadsheet and create a basic spreadsheet with data.<\/li>\n
            • Write formulas to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.<\/li>\n
            • Use shortcuts to enter formulas and create spreadsheets with formulas.<\/li>\n
            • Identify the correct order of operations and errors in formulas.<\/li>\n
            • Create spreadsheets with advanced formulas.<\/li>\n
            • Select the appropriate type of graph. Create and edit a graph from data in a spreadsheet.\u00a0<\/li>\n
            • List the actions a database can perform.<\/li>\n
            • List the differences and similarities between a database and a spreadsheet.<\/li>\n
            • For a specific business task, select a spreadsheet or a database based on which is more appropriate.<\/li>\n

              • Create, modify, and design text, animations, and transitions in presentation slides.<\/li>\n
              • Insert pictures, WordArt, and SmartArt into a presentation.<\/li>\n
              • Recognize the Insert tab as the location for accessing image formatting options and add audio and video into a slide presentation.<\/li>\n
              • Discuss the advantages of using both audio and video in communication media.<\/li>\n
              • Compare different programs for audio and video production.<\/li>\n
              • Describe five administrative positions related to audio and video production.<\/li>\n
              • Compare and contrast digital media and traditional forms of media.<\/li>\n
