Grade 5 – Online Options

Online Learning Options for Grade 5

Grade 5 includes several valuable online tools to support students’ literacy and digital skills:

Failure Free Reading
Failure Free Reading is a research-based non-phonic intervention designed to help struggling readers build vocabulary, comprehension and fluency through repeated exposure to age-appropriate texts, structured teacher-led lessons, software support and print activities.

Teaching Textbooks
Teaching Textbooks uses a spiral approach to teach math. Lessons are grouped by topic and include regular reviews. This helps students remember what they’ve learned and understand new ideas more easily. It’s a strong, flexible option for many learning environments.

Typing.com
Typing.com introduces young learners to essential keyboarding skills through step-by-step lessons, interactive exercises, and fun games. As students build accuracy and speed, they gain a key skill that will support them in school and beyond.

Wordly Wise
Wordly Wise is designed to build students’ academic skills by strengthening vocabulary and reading comprehension. Through structured lessons and word study, students learn to understand complex texts and use context clues effectively—skills essential across all subjects.

Failure Free Reading

Failure Free Reading (FFR) is an intensive reading-intervention program developed to help students who have not responded to traditional phonics-based instruction.

Developed by Dr. Joseph Lockavitch, FFR is based on the premise that many “non-readers” struggle due to limited language exposure, phonological deficits, or difficulty benefiting from conventional phonics instruction.

The program focuses on three instructional elements: (1) repeated exposure to meaningful text, (2) highly predictable sentence structures, and (3) age-appropriate story content requiring little prior knowledge.

FFR follows a three-part instructional cycle:

  • Teacher-led lessons introduce vocabulary, model fluent reading, and guide comprehension.

  • Computer-based “talking software” provides immediate feedback on word recognition, comprehension, and spelling.

  • Print reinforcement activities (worksheets, illustrated readers, and software-linked print tasks) strengthen fluency and retention.

The program emphasizes early success, confidence-building, and meaningful engagement with age-appropriate texts rather than remedial ones.

Scope and evidence:
Designed for K–12 and adult learners performing in the bottom 15 % of standardized reading tests, FFR has shown potentially positive effects on reading comprehension.
